Clinical Program Lead

Souad Messahel is a translational neuroscientist with 30 years’ experience dedicated to advancing innovative therapies for rare diseases with significant unmet medical needs, particularly genetic brain disorders that affect children. Her work focuses on bridging scientific discovery and clinical application to develop treatments that have the potential to transform the lives of patients and families facing devastating neurological conditions.

Souad was drawn to Chelsea’s Hope because of its commitment to supporting individuals and families impacted by Lafora disease. Inspired by the organization’s mission to provide hope, resources, and advocacy, she became involved to help amplify efforts that drive research and new therapies to the clinic. Souad has been serving on the Advisory Board for two years.

At Chelsea’s Hope, Souad contributes her scientific expertise, passion for advocacy, and commitment to accelerating therapeutic innovation for rare diseases. Her goal is to drive drug development efforts that will lead to the approval of effective therapies for Lafora patients, offering hope to families who currently have no treatment options. Souad has been instrumental in bringing ION283 to the clinic and support its further clinical development.

Through her work, Souad strives to strengthen connections, build ecosystems between the scientific, medical, and patient communities, fostering collaboration that can accelerate the path from research to approved medicines. She believes that meaningful progress happens when science, compassion, and advocacy come together. Her dedication to both rare disease research and community service reflects her commitment to creating a future where children affected by genetic brain disorders have access to life-changing treatments and the opportunity for better outcomes.
